Land goes back fast

Two or three seasons out of use and an open field in this part of Alabama is knee-deep in sweetgum and blackberry. Five and it's a thicket. Ten and there's real timber in it. The longer it sits, the more the fix costs — which is the whole argument for dealing with it this year instead of next.

Mulching takes the woody growth out without scraping the topsoil off, which matters on a field you want grass on again.

What happens after we leave

Mulched pasture needs following up or it comes straight back. Depending on the field that means discing, liming, seeding, spraying, or putting stock on it. We do the clearing and the dirt work; your county Extension office will tell you what that specific ground needs to carry grass again, and it's worth the phone call.
